Restaurant Reservations App

Find a table that’s free when you want it, and book it fast

A restaurant reservations app for diners who want to know where they can eat at the time they want. I designed search, booking, changes and reminders for iOS and Android, with the restaurant host’s needs in mind.

01The problem

What needed solving

Booking a table often means calling during a busy service, or using an app that shows restaurants but not whether they have space. Diners want to know quickly if they can eat somewhere at a time that suits them, and restaurants want accurate bookings and fewer no-shows.

Who it’s for

  • Diners planning ahead

To book a specific time for a group and share the details.

  • Last-minute diners

Somewhere nearby with a table free right now.

  • Restaurant hosts

Bookings with the right party size, notes and timely changes.

  • Groups and occasions

Special requests handled before they arrive.

02The main flow

Booking a table

The moment in blue is the one the whole design is built around.
  1. 01

    Sets party and time

  2. 02

    Browses open tables

  3. 03

    Picks a time slot

  4. 04

    Confirms with notes

  5. 05

    Gets a reminder

04Key decisions

Choices that shaped it

What I considered, what I chose, and why.

Decision 01

Availability before restaurant details

Diners scroll through restaurants that turn out to be full at the time they want.

Considered

A discovery feed of restaurants, with availability shown only on the detail page.

Chosen

Search starts with party size and time, and every result card shows bookable slots directly.

Why it works

It answers the real question, can I eat here tonight, straight away. Cards lost space for imagery, so photos moved into a swipeable header on the restaurant page.

Decision 02

Nearby times instead of fully booked

A fully booked restaurant is a dead end that sends diners elsewhere.

Considered

A Fully booked label with a waitlist button.

Chosen

The app shows the closest free times at that restaurant and at similar places nearby, with the waitlist as a secondary option.

Why it works

It keeps the diner moving towards a booking. Those set on that one place still have the waitlist.

Decision 03

A booking sheet, not a booking flow

Multi-screen booking forms feel heavy for something people often do on the move.

Considered

Separate screens for time, details and confirmation.

Chosen

A bottom sheet over the restaurant page that holds time, party size, requests and confirm, with saved details filled in.

Why it works

Diners keep the restaurant in view while they book. To keep the sheet short, occasion and allergy notes are optional and remember past answers.

05What’s inside

Key features

Search by time

Party size and time come first, so every result is somewhere you can book.

Live time slots

Bookable times shown on each card and on the restaurant page.

Menus and dietary notes

Menus to browse and dietary needs passed to the restaurant with the booking.

Reminders and changes

A reminder before the booking with one-tap options to change or cancel.

Nearby tonight

Places close by with tables free in the next few hours.

06Outcome

What was delivered

Delivered

  • Booking flows from search to arrival
  • Change, cancel and waitlist flows
  • High-fidelity iOS and Android screens
  • Prototype of the booking sheet
  • Reminder and confirmation message copy

What I learned

  1. 01

Putting time first turned a browsing app into a booking app.

  2. 02

What the app shows when a slot is gone matters as much as the happy path.
